Biography

This profile is part of the Kirkland Name Study.

John W. Kirkland was the sixth child born to Armstead Kirkland. He was born in 30 Mar. 1835[1] and died 15 Mar. 1920. He married Cordelia Kirkland in Henry County 13 September 1888.[2][3]

John and his wife signed the deed of 1904 that proves the heirs of his father Armstead Kirkland. John W. and Cordelia also signed the deed when the heirs of Armstead sold the remaining land in 1904.[4] Cordelia was a daughter of Francis Posey Kirkland. She was born September 1871 and passed in April of 1936.[5][6]

The family is listed on the U. S. Census for Henry County in 1900 through 1920. These Census records identify ten named children, Walter: 1889-1964; Silas: 1891-1977; Isaac Dink: 1895-1962; Julia: 1897-1968; Pinckney Wordlaw: 1899-1973; Willie Burton: 1901-1961; Littleton Thomas: 1904-1977; John Wesley: 1905-1993; William L. (died young): 1907-1912? and Lillian L. "Lizzie": 1911-1992.

Cordelia was reported, in 1910, to be the mother of ten children, nine living. The 10th child who had died prior to the 1910 census was unnamed. Lillian "Lizzie" was born after 1910 and William L Kirkland, who died at about 5 years, was listed in 1910.

Research Notes

John's middle name is unknown; no records indicating what the "W" represented have been located. Many online profiles show it as Wesley, yet none have supporting documentation and John W. Kirkland's son John Wesley Kirkland is nowhere identified as "Jr".

John W Kirkland passed away 15 Mar. 1920.[7] Find-A-Grave cites his burial in the Kirkland Cemetery in Henry, Alabama.[8]

The Find-A-Grave birth date of Apr. 1867 is incorrect. It was apparently gleaned from the 1900 Census; a source which is far too often proven wrong. First there is the date given by Dr. Peacock as referenced. Secondly those census' that are shared with his brother Jasper has John 1 to 2 years older than him. Jasper's death as etched on his headstone is 18 Mar. 1867. Both records prior to 1900 has his birth date at or Abt.1865 only in the later records does this date creep up.

Ronald - I've added information on the source links you provided. This is how you should show the source information, as there are people that don't have a subscription to ancestry and therefore would have no idea what the link is for. This way they can see what the source is and access the census rolls on a free website. Thanks.
