He was the son of James Kirkland and Isabella Fleming (born 9 Feb 1808 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, daughter of Hugh Fleming and Mary Wilson). His parents married on 9 Dec 1826 in Avondale, Lanarkshire.^[1][2]

He married Isobel Sterling on 1 Aug 1846 in Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[3] He and Isabel are on the 1851 census (William age 23, Isabel age 21) with a son James, age 1 mo.^[4] Isabel may have died prior to 1861, as son James is living with an uncle on the 1861 census and with his grandparents James and Isabel on the 1871 census.

He married Anna Muir on 22 Sep 1871 in Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[5]

He had several children, including James (born 6 Aug 1850 in Avondale), William, John, Isabella, and Helen (born 17 Oct 1871 in Avondale). He also had at least one other daughter, as on the 1881 census there is a John Paterson living with the family, age 5, and is his grandson.^[6]
