Theo[1] Kirkland was born on December 3, 1908[2] likely in New Brunswick.[3] He was the son of William Kirkland and Lillian McLaskey. In 1910, the family was living in Portland, Maine.[4] In 1920, they were living in Bangor.[5]
On the 1930 Census, Lillian and Theo were living in Bangor, Maine.[6] Lillian was listed as head of household, married and working as a Chocolate Dipper. Location of father, William, is unknown. Theo was 21 and working as a salesman in a grocery store.
In 1940, he was living in Brewer, Maine with wife Henrietta (Marsh) and their two children, Kirby (age 7) and Kenneth (age 4). Theo was working as a Post Office mail carrier.[7]
