Reuben was of the age to have been a son of Joshua. He occupied land that had been granted to Joshua, after Joshua passed from records, and is assumed to have been deceased. His origin was in the Mathews Bluff area of the Savannah River and he is absent from the issue of other Kirkland men in the generation of Joshua Kirkland, in that area.
Reuben Kirkland was a plantation owner in Barnwell County, South Carolina. He was a veteran of the American Revolution, and lost an arm in the battle of Brier Creek. His wife Mary survived him, as did his children George, Robert, Reuben Jr, William, Sarah (married name Brabham), and Lydia (married name Thurston).

Will proved in Barnwell County, SC. It is possible the first wife of James Ambrose Pelham was a McMillian or McMIllan of Barnwell County, SC and the mother of Mary Elizabeth Pelham. The second wife, Lydia Kirkland Pelham married James Thurston about 1814 and moved to Henry County, Ga where one son, George Washington Thurston was raised.
Two published works provide valuable information on Reuben Kirkland and his descendants. They are: Mizpah: A Family Book: Reverend M. M. Brabham (also known as Bufords Bridge and Its People), pages 24-35, 131-144, published in 1923, and a typescript work prepared by William Harris Manning, Jr. and Edna A. Manning, titled A Collection of Barnwell Families, published in 1963. Reverend Brabham's book was located in the Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina. It is important to note that two apparent errors appear in the lineage of Reuben in the Brabham report. Reverend Brabham reported Reuben was a brother to a Richard Kirkland and a George Kirkland. Further, the brother Richard served as an officer in the War of 1812. This writer agrees with the claim for a brother relationship between Reuben and George Kirkland, but is in disagreement with the two other claims.[1]
