Nathaniel M. Kirkpatrick was a member of Captain Morgan's Company of "Lexington Rifles" while serving the Southern Confederacy. He served for over a year before he was wounded in the attack on Edgefield Junction, between Nashville and Gallatin, Tennessee. He was discharged for disabilities and shortly captured by Federal troops. Nathaniel was held prisoner for several months before being paroled and returning to Lexington. In Perrin's History of Fayette County, Kentucky it is mentioned he never received compensation for his service.
