Samuel was born about 1853 in Newry, county Down, the son of William Kirkpatrick and Rebecca Marshall. Samuel struck out on his own at an early age, stopping for a while in San Francisco, where he worked in fruit canneries, before sailing for New Zealand in January, 1878. By 1881, he had set up a fruit processing manufactory at Nelson. Mr. Kirkpatrick played a pivotal role in the development of the town of Nelson. On the 24th December 1896, he married Edith Collings who, but three years later, succumbed to tuberculosis. Samuel Kirkpatrick lived to the age of seventy-two years, dying at Parakai near Helensville on the 21st May 1924.
