Biography

Robert Kirkpatrick was born about 1748 in Pennsylvania. He was about 2 years old when his parents migrated from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. He married Rebecca Woods sometime before 1781 when Jane Kirkpatrick was born. At this time, we do not know Rebecca's birthdate or birthplace. We do not have a marriage record for them. I would also like to learn the name of Rebecca Wood's parents.

The couple had at least nine children;

Jane Kirkpatrick b c 1781. Married Joseph Dowdle [looks like Dondle in probate rec] before 1804. The couple mentioned in the probate settlement of her father. Couple appears in 1820 York Co, SC census near her mother Rebecca, the widow and her brother Arthur.

Mary Kirkpatrick b c 1783. Married John Rainey bef 1804. The couple mentioned in the probate settlement of her father. She died before 1820 census where he appears with second wife. She may be the Mary Rainey 1778-1815 buried in Bullock Creek Cemetery with alot of her Kirkpatrick kin.

Joseph Wood Kirkpatrick b c 1785. Recieved his inheritance from his father's estate on 23 May 1814. He acted as co executor of the estate with his mother Rebecca.

Arthur Kirkpatrick b c 22 Apr 1792, died 27 Apr 1861. Arthur Kirkpatrick who was admin of (brother) Andrew Wood Kirkpatrick's estate. In the probate record, the name is written over and difficult to read, he received his inheritance from father's estate on 3 June 1814. An elder of Bullock Creek Church and buried in the cemetery.

Elizabeth Kirkpatrick b c 1787. Received her inheritance from father's estate on 3 June 1814.

James Kirkpatrick b 1789 and died 1816 in South Carolina. Received his inheritance from father's estate on 3 June 1814. He is buried at Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Sharon, York Co, SC.

Margaret Kirkpatrick b c 1790 and received her inheritance from father's estate on 14 June 1814.

Rebecca P Kirkpatrick b c 1794. Mentioned in probate of father as one of the two minor children. She received her inheritance from father's estate on 5 Mar 1819. Does this mean Rebeckah was born AFTER Andrew Wood Kirkpatrick instead of before?

Andrew Wood Kirkpatrick b 1797 in York Co, SC and died 19 Sep 1858. Mentioned in probate of father as one of two minor children. He received his inheritance on 26 Dec 1818. He was buried in Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in York County, South Carolina. He married Mary Hamilton.

Robert Kirkpatrick served in the militia for thirty days as a horseman in Captain Moffett's Company of Colonel Bratton's Regiment. He also gave supplies to the militia and the Continental line during the Revolutionary War. His name appears on the plaque at Bullock's creek Cemetery as a Rev War Patriot.

There is a Robert Kirkpatrick in the 1790 census for Camden Dist, York Co, South Carolina. That Robert had 2 sons and 5 daughters. If we count Margaret, who was b c 1790, then we have the names of 2 sons and 5 daughters by 1790.

Robert and Rebecca inherited a sizeable tract of land from Robert's father, James, where James had lived.

Robert Kirkpatrick died 13 April 1803 [or 1804] in York County, SC and buried in Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery. His wife Rebecca died 30 years later on 4 Nov 1833 and buried in the same cemetery.

There is a question about the year that Robert Kirkpatrick died based on the probate records. The Case File has the date of 1804. The bond of $3,000 by Rebecca Kirkpatrick, the widow, Joseph Wood Kirkpatrick (son) and Alexander Galloway was dated Nov 9 1804. The estate sale took place 4 and 5 Dec 1804. The settlement was finalized on 6 May 1815, with the heirs being paid in 1814. It seems that his death was likely in April 1804, not 1803.

Through the probate records, we surmise the married names of Robert and Rebecca's daughters. Payments to settle the estate of Robert Kirkpatrick were made:

The widow Rebecca Kirkpatrick (no date given)

Joseph Kirkpatrick on 23 May 1814

Joseph and JANE Dondle [Dowdle] on 1 June 1814

John and MARY Rainey on 1 June 1814

Arthur Kirkpatrick on 3 June 1814

James Kirkpatrick on 3 June 1814

Elizabeth Kirkpatrick on 3 June 1814

Margaret Kirkpatrick on 14 June 1814

Andrew Wood Kirkpatrick on 26 Dec 1818

Rebeckah P Kirkpatrick on 5 March 1819.

These payment dates draw into question the birthdates of the children. There is a notation in the probate records of two minor children when the payments are being made to the older issue of Robert and Rebecca. The two minors were Andrew and Rebecca P. IF Andrew had to be 21 years old before receiving his share, then a birth year of 1797 is correct. AND does that make his birthdate around Dec 26th?

But if we use that same idea with Rebecca P (dau) then using 1794 as her birth year gives us a woman of the age of 25. I believe the birth years for the children of Robert and Rebecca to be estimates, until the true birthdates are revealed.

Research Notes

Robert James Kirkpatrick was detached from these parents on 8/29/2023. Based upon the marriage bond that was provided as source, THAT Robert Kirkpatrick Sr and Jr were present in Rockbridge Co, VA in 1816 to post bond. The Robert Kirkpatrick of this profile was dead by 1804.

Also this Robert and Rebecca Kirkpatrick are not known to have any children b in TN.

And there is no mention of Robert James in the probate records of this Robert Kirkpatrick dated 1804. Unsure if the child Robert James listed here belongs to these parents. They had a son named James b c 1789 in SOUTH CAROLINA. I am not aware of any of their children being born in Tennessee. AND there was not a Robert James in the probate records of Robert Kirkpatrick.

Yes, it does. But that does not mean it is correct. Based on the records, the best guess is PA at this time.
