He was born about 1687 in Ulster, Ireland and was of Scotch-Irish heritage.
John Kirkpatrick married about 1710 in Ireland to Hannah Vance (1687–1771), daughter of Rev. Patrick Vance.
About 1711 he and his brother, Hugh Kirkpatrick (1697-1768), emigrated to Pennsylvania with their families. [1]
In 1720 the following were appointed to purchase land for the joint church at Lower Brandywine ... John Kirkpatrick, James Houston, James Mole, William Smith, Magnus Simonson, Ananias Higgins, John Heath and Patrick Scott. [2]
By 1729 he had moved to West Nottingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania [3]
He was a member of the West Nottingham Presbyterian Church. [4]
Beginning in 1760 he was listed as John Kirkpatrick, Sr. on the Chester County, Pennsylvania tax list. [5]
He passed away about 1772 in West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania and was buried at West Nottingham Cemetery (now in Colora, Cecil County, Maryland, USA). [6]
On 20 Nov 1772 Letters Testamentary were issued in his estate to his sons-in-law, Robert Evans and James Evans. [7] [8]
Philadelphia, PA - Interment of Mr. John Kirkpatrick - On Monday night Kirkpatrick was interred in the Presbyterian Church Yard in West Nottingham, Chester Co., PA, the remains of John Kirkpatrick who departed this life in his 85th year [born ca 1687], 62 yrs. of which he lived with one wife. He was the father of the late Rev. William Kirkpatrick, minister of the Gospel at Amwell, NJ. Margaret, widow of Rev. Kirkpatrick, died on 8 Sep. 1769 and remarried John Warford (born 1745). [9] [10]
In the name of God Amen. I, John Kirkpatrick of West Nottingham Township, County of Chester, Province of Pennsylvania, being weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory blessed be God therefor & calling to mind my mortality & that it is appointed to all men once to die do make, ordain & appoint this to be my last Will and testament, hereby revoking and disannulling all other or former Wills made by me.
And first of all I do commit my soul to God who gave it & my body to ye Earth to be buried in a decent manner at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting that I shall receive ye same again at general resurrection by ye mighty power of God.
And touching my worldly goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I dispose of, give & bequeath in ye manner following,
Imprimis: I order & appoint that all my estatem both personal & real, be sold at ye discretion of my executors, except my wearing apparel. I mean that they sell ye whole case ye above exception either by publick or private sale as soon as to them shall appear convenient.
Item: Out of said estate, so disposed of, I give & bequeath to my grandson, William Givens, ye sum of ten pounds Pennsylvania currency.
Item: I give & bequeath to my son, Hugh Kirkpatrick, ye sum of five pounds of said currency.
Item: I give & bequeath to my granddaughter, Hannah Welch, the sum of ten pounds of said currency.
Item: I give and bequeath to my grandson, John Given, sum of five pounds of sd currency.
Item: I order & give ten pounds of my estate to be laid out for ye use of ye congregation to which I have belonged, or otherwise for [not legible] & publick uses as my executors shall see meet.
Item: After all ye above legacys are paid off, also all my just debts & funeral charges, I order & appoint that the whole of my remaining estate except my wearing apparel, be divided into five equal shares & given to my children & grandchildren as follows & in ye following manner viz.
Item: It is my Will that my son John Kirkpatrick & my daughter, Margret Evans & Elinar Evans shall have each of them one of five parts.
Item: I order & appoint that one of said five parts be kept in ye hands of my executors for my grand children, James Boyd, John Boyd, William Boyd, Hannah Boyd, Mary Boyd & Jean Boyd & be equally divided among & given to said children or such of them as shall survive until they come of age or mary [sic] & at such time.
Item: It is my will that the last of said five parts be kept in ye hands of my executors for my grand children, viz. Lattice Charlton Kirkpatrick, Hannah Kirkpatrick & William Kirkpatrick, children of my son William Kirkpatrick & be equally given to them as they shall be of age or marry or to such of them as shall live to said time.
Item: It is my will that my wearing apparel be divided among my children or grandchildren at ye discretion of my executors.
Lastly, I constitute ordain & appoint my son-in-law Robert Evans & my son-in-law James Evans, ye whole & sole executors of this my last Will & testament, to see ye same executed according to yet true intent thereof. As witness my hand & seal this eighteenth day of November Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred & seventy one 1771.
