Biography

Edmund and Margaret Kirkpatrick were twins. Rebecca the mother died shortly after having the twins.

Missionary Baptist Preacher for Reeds Creek, AR from 1839 until his death.

Edmond was a farmer who owned a large amount of land. He also was a brick and stone mason. He built some of the first houses in Batesville, AR. In 1835 the family moved to Independence Co., AR, and in 1836 to Washington Twp., Lawrence Co., AR, where they are listed in the 1850 census. The census lists him as Edward Singleton Kirkpatrick, but he is obviously the same man. He was also a Baptist Preacher for Reeds Creeks, Lawrence Co., AR from 1839 until his death. He was also a Democrat.

Property In 1835, Edmund came to AR, settled on Big Bottom, White River, Independence Co., AR. In 1836, he moved to Lawrence Co., AR, settled on Reed's Creek, 20 mi. NE to Batesville, AR. Owned 160 acres of land on Reed's Creek and raised his family there. Became Owner of 500 acres and considerable property.

Religion "Church books of Reed's Creek, Independence Co., AR 1839 - 1888" Scrapbook of Jamestown Presbyterian Church 1839 - 1962" The first minute book began on Nov 16, 1839. John WOODROME is listed as the first pastor and named first member of the Reed's Creek Baptist Church. Four other Woodrome's were listed as members, such as, John (the Pastor), Nicholas (John's son), Jemima (John's wife) and A. J. (unknown). Anna KIRKPATRICK was also listed as a member (John's dau.). John WOODROME and E. L. KIRKPATRICK (I believe this should be E. S. - Anna's husband) are also listed as Clerks that served after Samuel SMITHEE (who was the first church clerk) (Source: The Independence Co. Chronicle, Vol. XXIV, No. 1-4, Dec 1982-July 1983, pg. 47)

Military Served in the Black Hawk War and fought in Kellogg's Grove under Maj. Demet. Had his horse killed underneath him in this fight.

He served in the Black Hawk War in 1832, and in 1850 and 1855 he applied for bounty land warrants based on this service. The applications for warrants came from Lawrence Co., AR.

Edmund served as a private under Captain William J. Stephenson, 1st Brigade, 2nd Regiment, Illinois Mounted Volunteers, in the Black Hawk War. He mustered at Hennepin, IL and served briefly. According to the "Centennial History of AR, Edmund was at the battle of Kellogg's Grove and had a horse shot out from under him. He was awarded a bounty land warrant for the service and applied for a second which we are not certain if he received. His brother, William T. Kirkpatrick served with the same unit.
