His parents both died when he was young and he was raised by his grandmother Emmaline in his Aunt's Household (Eliza Kirksey Cary) in the Yuma, TN area. When Papa was a young man, he got entangled with the Hatch boys and when cornered he attacked one with the axe handle. Afraid for the consequences of his actions he ran. Left the state with his best friend Doss Brown and the went roaming around Mississippi. Doss settled down and married in the community of Ellzey. Elbert kept wandering until he met the young 16 year-old gal named Eveline Edwards and he married her. The incident in TN made him into a pacifist. He was renowned for his gentle spirit, calm manner, peaceful nature. He never went home tho he did try to remain in contact with his cousins in Carroll County TN. There are several mysteries about him, his family and a woman named Caroline Brewer...the secrets of which died with him.
He was a farmer ... started out in cotton but ended up farming trees. He won awards for his soil, his projects and his crops. He died shortly before the birth of his great granddaughter, Erinne.
