Biography

Joseph, Susannah, and George sailed from Stromness (Orkney Isles, Scotland) on June 2, 1836. They traveled on the Prince Rupert IV ship. Joseph was signed on as a farm servant and the Hudson's Bay Company experimental farm.

He worked there as a farmhand with the Goods, and the Gowlers who also sailed out of Stromness that June. They were under the direction of Captain George Marcus Carey (Kerry). This was the last farm started by the Hudson's Bay Company in Red River.

It was located not far from the Upper Fort Garry on the flats along the Red River. Their trip was a memorable one. The ship was not able to reach Norway House before freeze up so they snowshoed 180 frozen wilderness miles from York Factory to Norway House. They were allotted land in Canada should they stay the full 5 year term. This they did.
