Martha Elizabeth Kissane was born 30 January 1922 to Hugh Hershey Kissane and Ruth Elizabeth (Forry) Kissane in Canton, Ohio.
She graduated with the Oberlin College class of '43 with a major in French. She taught at École Champlain in Vermont and returned to Oberlin for graduate school where she met Ted Frye, whom she had known in Junior High School. Ted had also been a student of Martha's father Hugh Kissane at West High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
Martha and Ted married on 28 June 1947 at the Old Stone Church in Cleveland, Ohio.[1]
Ted was offered a job at the Library of Congress, so Martha and Ted moved to Washington, D.C. When they arrived, they found that the offered job had not been funded. Ted took the Foreign Service exam and worked as a Secretary until he was offered a job as an Analyst with the State Department. Their two older children Michael and Susan were born. Six months after Susan was born, they were posted to the embassy in New Delhi, India. Housing was so short in the brand new capital of India that they lived with another family until they could find their own apartment.
The family returned from India to the port of New York on 7 July 1953. The family, which now included Meggy, who was born in India, sailed on the SS United States from Southampton.[2]
Martha lived in SE Washington and taught Junior High French at the Congressional School in Fairfax, Virginia. The family moved to a new development in Springfield, Virginia in 1956. Ted was posted to Israel in 1958. Martha and Ted helped to found the American International School in Herzliya. Martha also taught at the school and helped write a grant application that resulted in State Department funding for construction of a school.
When Martha returned to the United States she switched careers and became a computer programmer. Her youngest child Meggy passed away in an electrical accident in 1968. Martha and Ted adopted two children, Raymond Edward, age 7, and Dorothy Elizabeth, (age 8), in 1970. Seven years later, Martha and Ted divorced.
Martha retired as a Systems Analyst for IBM.
Martha passed away 16 January 1990 at her home in Encinitas, California.[3][4]
