Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC - senior British Army officer and colonial administrator
1898: won the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title "Lord Kitchener of Khartoum";
Chief of Staff (1900–02) in the Second Boer War
Commander-in-chief (1902–09) of the British Army by which time Boer forces had taken to guerrilla fighting and British forces imprisoned Boer civilians in concentration camps.
1914, at the start of the First World War - Secretary of State for War, a Cabinet Minister.
Won fame for his imperial campaigns and later played a central role in the early part of World War I.

Kitchener was en route to Russia on a diplomatic mission aboard the armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire when it struck a German mine on 5 June 1916 and sank west of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. [1] His body was never found, but there are several memorials to him, including one in Saint Paul's Cathedral, London[2].
