Gladys Kathleen Kitchen was born on September 28, 1913, in Columbia, Arkansas to Wade Hampton Kitchens and Lillie Ethel Dempsey. She grew up in Magnolia, Arkansas and later lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas. On July 15, 1938, she married John Pickens in Stafford, Virginia. The couple had two children together: Polly Ann Pickens and Patricia Pickens. Gladys and her family lived in various places including Massachusetts, New York and Queens. She experienced the loss of her mother Lillie Ethel Dempsey in 1964 and her father Wade Hampton Kitchens in 1966. Gladys passed away on April 26, 2008 at the age of 94
