Biography

Matilda Kitchens was born 2 March 1826 in Jasper Co. GA. Her parents were Charles and Elizabeth Kitchens. She married Thomas J. Dearing in Jasper Co. GA 18 Dec. 1843. The couple had three known children: Arra Ann Dearing-b. 1845, Sarah Adaline Matilda Dearing-b. 1847, and Henry T. Dearing-b. 1854. Matilda's daughters Arra-(1st) and Sarah-(2nd) married John Lumpkin Fincher, and are buried near her in the Fincher family cemetery on Fincherville Rd. about 3/4 mile south of its junction with Key Ferry Rd.-(in the front yard of double-wide home). John L. Fincher, his wives, and Arra's infant son are memorialized on a large obelisk.

Matilda's father Charles Kitchen died in Jasper Co. GA 13 January 1864, and his estate was initially processed as intestate-Jesse M. Owens named administrator. His widow Elizabeth however, insisted he'd died testate, and shortly procured a copy-which was validated in Jasper Co. Probate Court by the original scrivener and three of four witnesses, admitted to record, and immediately appealed to Superior Court, where the lower court decision was affirmed. A further appeal to the GA Supreme Court failed to overturn the will-[See Google Books-'Court Reports'-June Term 1869-'Kitchens vs Kitchens']. This contested estate created tons of records, including a Georgia Archive file, and over three hundred loose pages from local Jasper Co. trials-(available in 'Georgia Probate Records' using familysearch.org. See numerous depositions among these: Matilda Dearing's, daughter Sarah Fincher's, and her cousin Henry Z. Kitchens' are on the USGenWeb 'Archives Project' site of Butts Co. GA under 'Court Records, and several on the similar Jasper Co. siite, including the will, under 'Wills and Estates'.
