Biography

James Monroe, "Monroe" was the son of Thomas Holly Kittle Thomas Kittle and Amanda Mitchem. He married Viola Richardson December 30 1902. There were 5 children. Monroe's WWI registration confirms his date of birth and age; also, his wife's name and their address, and his physical description: Tall, Slender, brown eyes & black hair.

The 1910 Census shows that James and Viola have been married 7 years, a first marriage for both. Their son James H is 4 years old, and their daughter Leola is almost 2 (one and 11 months). Caldonia ( Kittle) Bailey, James' married sister, age 21, is living with them and working on the farm in Randolph County, Precinct 4 Alabama.

The 1920 Census shows James and Viola's family lived in Rock Mills, Beat 11, Randolph County Alabama. The date of enumeration was January 8, ths information was recorded by Joseph M Keeble. James Monroe was a farmer and rented. This could mean he earned a percentage based on "share cropping" that was common then.
