Biography

Volga German
Konrad Klein was a Volga German.
Konrad Klein has German Roots.

Family #78b in the 1767 Grimm census.
Family #153 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #322 in the 1834 Grimm census.

The Klein family was living in Grimm since 1767, when Heinrich Konrad Klein's father, Wilhelm Klein, was documented as living in family #78b as an orphan, living with his stepfather Heinrich Heinz.

1767 Grimm Census, Klein Entry [1]

Family # 78b
Head of the Household Wilhelm Klein, age 15, Lutheran from Isenburg, stepon of Heinrich Heinz
Father Wilhelm Klein, deceased (in Germany)
Stepfather Heinrich Heinz
LIved with Heinrich Heinz family

If his mother was Heinrich Heinz's wife in the 1767 census, then her name was Katharina.

1767 Grimm Census, Heinz Entry [2]

Family # 78
Head of the Household Heinrich Heinz, age 35, Lutheran craftsman from Zweibrücken
Wife Katharina Heinz, age 38

Her name in the Kulberg reports, however, is Susanna, and she is listed as a widow traveling with three children. [3]

His mother must have met Heinrich Heinz, an unmarried immigrant, while the family was still living in Oranienbaum. They did not travel on the same ships to Russia, but would have certainly had the chance to meet in St. Petersburg or Oranienbaum. The couple married, probably in the fall or winter, before the journey to the Volga River began the following spring.

If his mother's full name was not Susanna Katharina or Katharina Susanna, then Wilhelm's mother had died by 1767 and her husband (his stepfather) remarried before the first census was taken.

1775 Grimm census [4]

Family # 153
Head of the Household Heinrich Heintz, age 46
Wife Katharina Heintz, age 40
Stepson #1 Wilhelm Klein, age 19
Stepson #2 Faldin Schwarz, age 18

The 1798 census reports that Heinrich Heinz and his family moved to Sarepta. [5] This would explain why the family is missing from the 1798 Grimm census. It is in this census where we would have first seen the Heinrich Konrad Klein of this profile listed, since he was born in 1785. I do not have access to a census from Sarepta to confirm his birth.

For whatever reason, Wilhelm and Heinrich Konrad Klein returned to Grimm and are listed in the 1834 Grimm census under the misspelled surname of Gleim. Although father Wilhelm was still alive and head of the household at 80 years of age, son Heinrich Konrad died in 1830, leaving behind his wife and seven children.
