Biography

Bill was a Friend (Quaker)

Unless otherwise footnoted, the following abstracted from Plains Kansas 100 Years.[1]

William was born 11 Sep 1888 in Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri the son of John and Nora B (Gowens) Klein.[2] in 1903 the family was in Kansas and members of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting.[3] He married Dollie Packard before 1909 and in 1911 the couple and first daughter Myra moved to a farm ten miles south of Plains, Kansas across the road from what would become the West Glendale Friends Church. The early years were difficult living in a two room house with one room having a floor of dirt. Dollie sold butter and eggs to residents of Plains. Bill purchased one of the first Ford touring cars in the area but gas had to be purchased by the drum and brought in by rail. About 1915 the family moved near Lamar, Colorado but returned to Plains in 1919 living four miles south of Plains on the Leslie Farm. They then purchased 80 acres on the southeast corner of Plains and built a home where Billy Jr was born in 1925. The Klein's later sold the farm to son-in-law and daughter Elwood and Agnes Hill.

Bill Klein passed away 19 Mar 1963 and is interred at the Plains Cemetery.[4]

Research Notes

While the family lived across the road from the West Glendale Meeting they do not appear in the extant records.[5] However, the meeting was not formally organized at the time and functioned more as a preparatory meeting of the Fowler meeting. A CW and Ida B Packard are cited in the West Glendale minutes.
