Biography

This profile is part of the Cline Name Study.

Adam Kline was born in Germany and immigrated to Philadelphia with his family in 1749, He married Anna Maria (last name unknown) about 1760 . The couple had nine (confirmed) children.

Most of what we know about Adam is anecdotal information. Adam was born in Germany between 1728 and 1742, place unknown and parents unknown. In 1995, David Cline wrote a book called the Klein, Kline, Cline Brothers of the Valley about 3 brothers and possible a sister who arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Fane in 1749..Those brothers were Jacob, Anthony and Adam of this profile. Their sister has recently been connected and believed to be Barbara Klein Trout. Three Kleins were listed on the Fane's manifest: Johannes Klein, Jacob Klein and Johann Caspar Klein. and their paths after arrival in Philadelphia are unknown. This is especially interesting because the brothers were likely between 9 and 15 if they arrived in 1749. Certainly, they could not have arrived alone. It seems likely at least one of them was related in some way to these four siblings.

There is little recorded information discovered thus far about the first 20 years after Adam arrived in Pennsylvania. It is likely that he settled in the area around Pennsylvania. About 1760, he met and married Anna Maria, last name unknown. They had several children in Pennsylvania. The brothers left Pennsylvania and arrived in Frederick County Virginia in the 1770s. It is unclear if they came together or arrived separately. The date of death for Adam is unsourced, but a will appears in David Cline's book with DOD of 1800, and that has been used here. Also, from the his will, it appears he had it drawn up in 1799 and probated in 1800, if I am reading it correctly. David Cline's book also contained numerous contacts and trees from descendants of Jacob's. Evidently, none of his research yielded the name of Adam's parents, or a location from which they came.

A misperception that has persisted for some time is that a grave marker in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Stephens City, Va., is evidence of an older Jacob Klein born in 1715, and a younger Jacob, his son, born 1736. By inference this older Jacob also would be the father of Jacob’s brother Adam Kline. Find A Grave Memorial 11770939 contains this misperception [1]], although now with the 1715 date removed and a correction added by contributor Rick Wilde. The purported marker for this Jacob is in fact the reverse of the marker for Joh. Jacob Kline [sic] (1736-1816), Memorial 11770914] [2]. The reverse reads “John Jacob Klein,” and “Psa 17 - 15.,” which was misread as the year 1715. There is no evidence to support the claim of a Jacob Kline Sr. and Jr. that is still on Find A Grave.

Philipp Wendel Klein also had a son named Adam Klein who immigrated with his father and settled in the Weisenberg, Pennsylvania area in 1744. That Adam also married an Anna Maria (unknown) --with no evidence uncovered for suggested last names. Birth records found in Weisenberg were attributed to Adam and Anna Maria Kline that moved to Virginia. Corrections continue to be made on the profiles of the children.

These are the baptismal records that need to be substantiated, but may not be for this Adam and Anna Maria Kline.

Will of Kline, Adam (sourced below) Will, 9 Dec 1799/1 Dec 1800 Children: Michael, John, Susannah wife of Henry Grever [Groves], Mary wife of Peter Gilham, (dec’d) Barbara wife of Abraham Grapes (dec’d) Elizabeth Evens [Ewens, Ewing]. Other sons-in-law: Daniel Trout, Michael Ridenour, Jacob Lawyer. Brother: Jacob Kline Sell all personal estate, lands and appurtenances at public auction, use resulting money as follows: To son-in-law Henry Grever [Groves] and Susannah his wife, 2 shillings and no more; to son Michael Kline, 5 shillings curr. Money and no more. Having heretofore lent to my sons and sons-in-law sums stated, these amounts to be added to return from sale of estate and equally divided into eight parts to be given as follows: Six parts equally divided among son John Kline, sons-in-law Daniel Trout, Michael Ridenour, Jacob Lawyer, and daughters Mary Gilham and Barbara Grapes; one part to children of son Michael or survivors equally when they come of age or marry; one part to daughter Elizabeth Evans, abandoned by her husband, L 10 annually to be delivered until she has received her share. Wit: Andrew Redd $10,000 (Jacob Kline refused executorship) [Barbara Clyne married Abraham Grapes 19 May 1792; Fdk Co. Marrs.] (p. 557-558)

The clerk who copied Adam's will into the record book read Henry Groves name as "Greeves" and Elizabeth’s surname as "Evens." The names of Adam's son-in-law, Henry Groves, and daughter, Elizabeth Ewing, are contradicted by other documents: by the marriage records of Susannah Kline and Henry Groves, with bond signed by Adam Klein; and by the accounts for Adam's estate, which refer to Elizabeth as Ewens and, more frequently, Ewing. Adam’s land was adjacent to that of a William Ewing.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Adam by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Adam:
