Family Immigration

Jacob "Jake" Lebsack, their oldest son, described the Immigration. Memories:

Jacob "Jake" Lebsack was born on July 14, 1906 in Frank, Russia, to Jacob and Katherine (Klein) Lebsack. When Jake was six years old he immigrated with three siblings and his parents to America. They arrived at Ellis Island in December 1912.
Although Jacob was only six years old when he left Russia, he had many stories to share about his family. He remembered much sickness on the ship coming to America. Of the 27 children who started out for America, only seven survived. Jacob, brothers Fred and John, and sister Lydia were among the seven survivors.
The Lebsack family settled in Hastings, Neb., for the first three years, then moved to Proctor (Proctor, Logan County, Colorado). He started his schooling in Hastings and continued his education at McGinley School at Proctor and Sterling (Sterling, Kit Carson County, Colorado) High School."[2]

Son Fred Lebsack's description of the Immigration

Born in the village of Frank, Russia, Fred came to America with his family sailing aboard the S.S. Pennsylvania from Hamburg, Germany on November 30, 1912, destined for the Port of New York and then on to Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1917, they settled in the area of Proctor, Logan County, Colorado. Fred graduated from Logan County High School in 1928, farmed near Proctor for a while and moved to California in 1936.

Frank was a prosperous farming village founded & populated by Germans who had come to Russia in the 1760s at the invitation of Catherine-the-Great of Russia. They came from the Hessen area of Germany. The surname "Lebsack" is on the list of original settlers. Fred's family left Frank to seek a land of liberty during a period of history when the Russian Czar had put an end to all their privileges and was determined to make of these Germans full-fledged Russians.[3]
