Oct 1850: We find a Joseph Klanke age 30 (b.1820) listed in the US Federal Census records for Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio along with his wife Mary age 27 (b.1823) where they were both listed as born in Germany. Neither of these individuals were found in the Census of 1840 and it is quite likely this record belongs to Carl Joseph Klenke [Klenke-24]. His occupation is listed as Foundry-man.[4]

Jun 1860: We find a Jos Klenke age 40 (b.1820) listed in the US Federal Census records for Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio along with his wife Mary age 40 (b.1820) (which is a change from above) where they were both listed as born in Hanover. His occupation is listed as Molder. Also listed were four children - Henry, John, Jos and Frank (ages 10, 7, 5, and 2, respectively).[5]

1870: The Federal Census of 1870 shows Joseph (a foundry man) and Mary “Klenker” with four sons (Harry – age 20 – cigar maker; John – age 18 – Foundry man; Joseph – age 16 – Tobacco striper; and Frank – age 12 – at school).

1880: Federal Census we find Joseph (age 62 – a Molder) his wife Mary (age 63 – Housekeeper), Son Henry (age 30 – still making cigars); Frank (age 22 – Molder); Franchesca (age 23 – daughter-in-law of Joseph) and her little Rosa (age 1 – granddaughter of Joseph). They lived in a very large apartment or rooming house building at 97 Woodward St. in Cincinnati because many large families shared the same address.

1904: The last letter we have that was written by Great Grandpa (F.H. Klenke) dated April 3, 1904 to his nephew .

Dear Nephew Heinrich Klenke:
... Now you would like to know which uncles of mine went to America. There were two brothers of my father: Heinrich and Joseph, who in 1840 went to America, both are dead. ..… Of uncle Joseph, three sons still live in Cincinnati. ….
Your loving uncle
F.H. Klenke [6]

This is clearly his uncle's family.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
