Biography

Emma's parents are given as Peter and Roxina Kline on her marriage certificate.

Emma Kline was born about 1864 in Ontario. In the 1871 census she is 7 years old and living in Vaughan, York West, Ontario with her parents Peter and Rosanna, and her five siblings.

In the 1881 census she is enumerated in Richmond Hill, York, Ontario. She is one of eight children at home.

By 1891 Emma is married to John Nelson, and they are living in Aurora, York, with their own little daughter.

In 1901 Emma is married, but the head of the household. She has three young children and is running a boarding house in Toronto Junction, York. They have four boarders, young men between the ages of 19 and 21. In 1911 she is 47 and gives her occupation as "operator". All three children are still at home.

By 1921 Emma is widowed, 57 years old, and living at 38 Hook Avenue, Toronto (a three-storey brick row house). She still has two children living at home, but they are grown up and working. Emma gives her occupation as "none". Here is a link to the house as it looked in May 2016: [1]

Emma's children were Hazel Mildred (1890, Aurora), Gladys Marjory (b. 1893, Toronto Junction; d. 1910), Earl Kline (1895, Etobicoke), and Charlie Houghton (1896, West Toronto Junction).

Research Notes

According to John Wesley's death certificate, he was still alive in 1921 when Emma gave her status as "widowed". Since he was not living at home in 1901 and 1911, can we assume their marriage had dissolved?

Exact birth date given on 1901 census - hard to read. Census links to be given when the LAC website is back up.
