Biography

Verna May Kline was born to Bertha and Lewis Kline on 8/25/1911. Verna's father Lewis died about a month after registering for the WWI draft from complications of the 1918 flu during the pandemic . In 1920 her mother Bertha is listed as a widow with no occupation on the Delaware county PA census. Verna was not listed on the 1920 census which also did not have header info filled out. As a young woman Verna worked as a machinist's helper at the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company which was a major shipbuilding company in Chester, Pennsylvania on the Delaware River. According to Wikipedia the company was developed by Sun Oil Company, and launched its first ship in 1917, just as the United States was entering World War I. Verna was also a member of the Ladie's Auxilliary Bethel Township Fire Company No1 and she belonged to the Delta Mu sorority, EMO Philadelphia. She married Raymond Wilgis on 9/26/1927 in Elkton, Maryland. In 1930 Verna lived with Raymond and her daughter Verna Grace in his parents house in Upland, PA (Verna Grace was born 10/5/1928). Verna and Raymond's son Donald was born 12/29/1933. In 1940 Verna and Raymond were living in Chester Township PA with Verna Grace and Donald. In 1941 Raymond and Verna bought land on Garnet Mine Road and built their own house there. Verna died due to respiratory failure (primary cause of carcinoma of breast) on 2/26/1947 in Bethel Township, PA. She is buried with family members in Lawncroft Cemetery in Linwood, Delaware county, PA and her name appears on the headstone that also contains the names of her parents Lewis C and Bertha J Kline.
