Biography

This is the profile for Christian F. Knapp, the father of John Knapp.

Middle Name

The fact that Christian's middle name was Friedrich is established by his marriage record, which gives his full name as Christian Friedrich Knapp.[1]

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Christian's parentage and date and place of birth are uncertain. According to the profile for son John Knapp in the 1887 Portrait and Biographical Album of Benton County, Iowa, Christian was born in Stuttgart, Germany.[2] Christian's German origins are further supported by the 1880 US Census entry for son John Knapp, which states that John's father was born in Germany.[3]

Based on the entry for 1830 US Census, which indicated that Christian was aged 30-40,[4] and the 1840 US Census, which indicates that Christian was aged 40-50,[5] Christian was born sometime in 1790-1800.

Christian may have been the Christian Knapp, son of Jacob Knapp and Anna Barbara (Haller) Knapp of Holzmaden-Jesingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany (about 40 miles souttheast of Stuttgart), who was born (or baptized) on August 8, 1795.[6]

Immigration; Residency in Philadelphia

According to the profile for son John Knapp in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Benton County, Iowa, Christian emigrated from Germany to America in 1807 and settled in Philadelphia.[2]

Marriage
