Joseph Knapp was born on 9 June 1740 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His parents may have been Benjamin Knapp and Sarah Baker. Few details are known of his early life.
Joseph Knapp married Susanna Packard of Bridgewater, Massachusetts on 28 August 1760. Jonathan Willis, a Justice of the Peace, officiated at the ceremony held in Norton, Massachusetts.[1] [2] Five known children were born of this union: Joseph Knapp, Matilda Knapp Millett, Zibzh Knzpp, Elijah Knapp, and Rhoda Knapp Gott.
Joseph Knapp of Bridgewater, Massachusetts enlisted in Colonel John Bailey's Bailey-371 2nd Plymouth Regiment on 3 May 1775. He served as a Private in Captain Daniel Lothrop's company. The term of service was 3 months and 6 days. [3]
Bailey's Regiment was a unit of the Massachusetts Line, which itself was a part of the Continental Army established in 1777. Under the leadership of Colonel John Bailey for much of its existence, this regiment participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill, the New York Campaign, the Battle of Trenton, the Battle of Princeton, the Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Monmouth. The regiment was disbanded on November 3, 1783 at West Point, New York. [4]
Following the war, Joseph and his family moved to Maine. It is tempting to think he moved in order to petition for one of the Maine Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants which were offered as an incentive to enlist in the patriot cause and were later used, along with pensions, to pay veterans for their service. This doesn't appear to be the case. Joseph Knapp's name is not listed in the War Bounty Indexes.
Joseph Knapp Sr. is buried under a military tombstone at Knapp Cemetery in Leeds, Androscoggin County, Maine, USA. The inscription reads, "Pvt. Lothrop's Company, Bailey's Regiment. Revolutionary War". To see an image of his headstone click here. [1]
