Biography

Achilles was born in 1720.

He passed away in 1809.

Probate

Administrators Elizabeth Knight and Aaron Knight in Marlborough District, South Carolina for Achilles who died intestate. Later she is referred to as Mrs. Elizabeth Rye, so she was remarried by Nov 16, 1810.

In North Carolina there is a proceeding with Elizabeth and Aaron as plaintiffs for Achilles against Moses Knight and ?Ivan? Covington also names Matthew Rye, perhaps the new husband of Elizabeth.

Research Notes

Achilles Knight died 1809 without a will. The probate named his wife Elizabeth Parker Knight and later Rye was a young woman. She was named in her father's will (Stephen Parker) as Elizabeth Rye and was born about 1776 and had young children and had more children with her next husband Matthew Rye. Achilles birth date is unknown and is very questionable if he was father of Aaron, Moses, Lucy and Nathaniel.

Not sure what the J is.

In the bio of his daughter, Lucy Jane Knight Weaver, he is referred to as "Achilles H. Knight." That middle initial, "H." may refer to his mother's maiden name, "Harris."

Aged 26 to 44 in 1800 census middle is born 1765.

Perhaps father is instead Moses Knight Sr. (abt.1746-abt.1832) rather than that being his son. There appear to be both father and son Moses Knight that may be conflated.

1809 • Wife & children confirmed by will (and probate) — Wife: Elizabeth Parker Knight; Children: William, David, Charlotte (married to a Rye); Agnes, and Stephen. May have had more that were not named.[1]

14 Jul 1809 • Marlboro District, South Carolina, USA: Administrators for Estate of Achilles Knight, deceased: Elizabeth Knight (widow) and Aaron Knight. Signed by: Elizabeth Parker Knight, Aaron Knight, William Pegues Jr., and Solomon Rye.

1810 • Richmond, North Carolina: Judgement filed by the Estate of Achilles Knight against Moses Knight & William Covington, in Richmond County, NC. This is believed to have been due to non-payment for items the two men committed to "purchase" during the Estate Sale.

DNA Information

See Knight DNA Group Project, Kit # 960827. This line (J. Achilles Knight Sr. (abt.1720-bef.1809)) should NOT be haplogroup R-FT420076.

See the R-FT420076 line with the Cone family in Georgia: William Anderson Knight (1778-1859).

See also: William Henry Cone Jr. (1749-1816).

Appears "son" Joseph Knight (abt.1745-aft.1820) should be detached.

The father-son relationship between this profile and "son" Joseph Knight (abt.1745-aft.1820) is not reliably sourced. See the DNA Information research note which support detaching Joseph Knight as a son.

I meant to say that Achilles Knight Jr. likely either a son or nephew of J. Achilles Knight Sr. I haven't seen all the probate, but is it possible the two Achilles probates are mixed?

I think the Achilles you refer to is a son of J. Achilles Knight Sr. Achilles Jr. was born 1771 SC-d 1809 Marlboro co., SC-he is likely the son of Moses 1746-1836 and Anna Harris 1750-1820.

His children are believed to be

Agnes Knight b Marlboro District, SC d-1823 Richmond Co., NC, David Knight Stephen Knight b Marlboro District, SC William Knight.

The accounts in the estate packet of Achilles Knight in Marlboro Co., SC identify several of his children, but not those listed here. They were William Knight, who is described as his eldest son, David Knight, identified as his second child, Charlotte Rye, identified as his third, and Stephen Knight (whose tuition costs were being paid by the estate). The youngest seems to have been Agnes Knight, who remained with her stepfather into the 1820s. It seems doubtful Achilles was this old if he had small children in 1809 and his wife remarried very soon after his death to Matthew Rye. Obviously, his daughter Charlotte was also married to a Rye. What are the sources for these children?
