Biography

Stephen was born 2 April 1849 in Amherst County, Virginia.^[1] He was the youngest son of William Knight and Susanna Roberts. He was named after his father's maternal grandfather, Stephen Ham.

In 1850 in Amherst County, Virginia he was one year old living with his father William age 58, mother Susanna age 48, step sister Sally Hill age 22, and siblings Mildred Knight age 18, Susannah M Knight age 14, Paul N Knight age 13, Marcellus Knight age 4, Daniel C Knight age 6, and Sophia Knight age 4.^[2]

In 1860 in Amherst County, Virginia he was age 10 living with his father William age 68, mother Susanna age 58, and siblings Althea T Knight age 16, Daniel C Knight age 14, Victoria Knight age 12.^[3]

In 1870 in Temperance Township, Amherst County, Virginia, his father William was a farmer age 79 with land valued at $4500 and personal property valued at $575. His mother Susan age 67 was keeping house and Stephen age 22 and his brother Marcellus age 31 were farm hands.^[4]

In 1880 in Temperance Township, Amherst County, Virginia, he was single and working as a farmer living with his half brother William R Hill.^[5]

In 1900 in the south part of Temperance Township, Amherst County, Virginia, he owned his farm free and was age 51 and single. His widowed sister Susan Paxton, age 63, was living with him.^[6] He and his widowed sister Susan remained in the same place in 1910.^[7]

He died at his home in Amherst County, Virginia on 27 Oct 1919.^[8] Samuel A Smiley was the informant on his death certificate. According to the family bible, he died on Monday at 9:05 and is buried in the old Knight farm burial ground.^[9]
