Biography

Martha Elizabeth Knight[1] was born 27 July 1826 in Amherst County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Knight and Susanna Dameron. [2]

She married William Leckie[3] 16 Dec 1846 in the independent city of Lynchburg, Virginia.[4]

In 1850 they lived in Lynchburg, Virginia. The family included Wm L Leckie age 27. Martha E age 23, Ro L age 2 and Henry T age 1. William was a tinner.[5]

In 1860 they lived in Lynchburg, Virginia and were enumerated as Lackey. William was a tinner. The family included William L age 39, Martha E age 33, Henry F age 11, George G age 9, Ida age 7, and Fannie age 5.[6] In 1870 in Lynchburg the family included William age 45, Betty age 43, George G age 18, Jane B age 16, Fanny E age 14, and Richard age 8. Son George was working as a tinner apprentice.[7]

In 1880 the family was living in 7th Street in Lynchburg. William age 56 was a tinner, Martha E age 53 was keeping house, son Harry T age 29 was a proofreader in a Government printing office, son George G age 27 was a clerk in a store, daughter Ida V age 22 worked in a millinery, daughter Fannie E age 20 was a teacher, and son Richard age 18 was a clerk in a store. Others in the household included daughter-in-law Emma age 25, granddaughter Mamie age 4 and grandson Charlie age 2, all born in the District of Columbia as well as daughter-in-law Robena age 20 born in Virginia.[8]

In 1900 she was widowed, age 73, living in Lynchburg with daughter Ida age 39 and nieces Francis age 13 and Virginia age 10. She was the mother of 9 children, 3 of whom were living.[9]

She died 27 Feb 1901 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Lynchburg City, Virginia.[10]
