Harper L. Knight, 96, died July 8, 2004 in Hamilton. Funeral services were July 11 in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton with Rev. Bradley Layton officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

Mr. Knight was born September 20, 1907 in Cooke County, the son of William and Florence Phillips Knight.

As a young man he participated in rodeos and was a cowboy in West Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1935. He was the first Vocational Agriculture teacher in the Bowie ISD and was instrumental in establishing their program.

During WWII he managed a government cheese plant in Watonga, Okla. For a number of years he worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Knox County. He also served as a bank loan officer for the First National Bank in Bowie.

Mr. Knight served two terms as county judge in Childress County [2] and had a private law practice in Childress. Foremost, he was a rancher.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. He was a past Worshipful Master, and a past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Childress.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Juanita (Nita) Jane Knight in 1993; his parents; three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane Blackwell and her husband Gene of Lamkin, three grandchildren, Dr. Robert Blackwell of Palestine, Debora Bryant of Tyler and Brenda Shelton of San Antonio.

Pallbearers were Robert Blackwell, Lynn Bryant, Stephen Bryant, Gary Shelton, Davis Linn, Demps Knight, Mitch Lykins and Jack Meholin.
