Biography

Mary Ann was born around 1840 in the Market Town of Rushden, in Northamptonshire, England[1]. Her father was John (Knight) and her mother's name wasn't recorded.

Marriage

Samuel (Giddens) marries Mary Ann (Knight) on the 8 November 1865 at the Parish Church of St. Andrews, High Street, in the Village of Sutton (aka Sutton-in-the-Isle), on the high ground of the Isle of Ely, near the Cathedral City of Ely, near the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England[2][3].

Children

Samuel and Mary Ann had eight children:

  1. Samuel (April-June 1866---April-June 1866)
  2. Alfred (April-June 1867)
  3. Ernest (April-June 1869)
  4. Minnie (January-March 1871)
  5. Arthur (October-December 1872)
  6. Laura Knight (January-March 1875)
  7. Ellen Edith (April-June 1877)
  8. Samuel Charles (April-June 1880)

Residence

The 1871 Census sees the Giddens family living in the Ship Inn in Sutton High Street where Samuel was both the publican and a butcher. In 1881 they were still living in the High Street and this time Samuel was recorded only as a butcher; it is not clear whether the family had moved home, or simply closed down the pub. Ten years further on and in the 1891 Census some of the family had moved to 1 Archway Cottage, Pound Lane, Sutton and this is where Samuel and Mary Ann continued to live until their deaths. With the 1911 Census, all the children have moved away and Samuel and Mary Ann (Knight) are living there with their granddaughter, Edith Mary (Allen)[4].

Death

Mary Ann (Knight) passes away on the 5 April 1920 at 1 Archway Cottage, Pound Lane, in the Village of Sutton (aka Sutton-in-the-Isle), on the high ground of the Isle of Ely, near the Cathedral City of Ely, near the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England. She was 79 years old at the time of her death[5].
