Nathan was born 1780 or 1781 in Rhode Island, USA.[1] He was the son of Jonathan Knight and Hannah Stone.[2] One good snapshot of his family can be found at family search.org[3] though not all of his siblings and children that are found there are sourced here.
Some time before 1820 Nathan and his family had moved to West Greenwich, Rhode Island.[4] The 1850 census finds him still there and identifies his trade as a blacksmith.[5]
Nathan passed away 13 Mar 1858 in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island, USA.[6]
Research Notes:
A chart (with sources) was made to help make reasonable conclusions regarding our Nathan Knight's family relationships.[7] From it certain facts become clearer.
Nathan was the son of Jonathan Knight and Hannah Stone. (See "Research Notes" on the profile of Johnathan Knight for information on Hannah's surname). Both Nathan Knights in sources #2 & 3, with birth dates c1780/81, show Jonathan & Hannah as birth parents and between them name Nathan's four known children (listed below).
Nathan may have been married twice, first to Elizabeth M Rice and to another called "Abby"; though it is more likely Abby was a familiar/nickname for Elizabeth, as Ambrose, whose mother is cited as Abby, is a middle child of Nathan [Sr.] whose other children have records identifying Elizabeth as their mother. Nathan's second child Olney has a mother listed as "Betsy" which is a very common familiar name for Elizabeth.
The four children that are linked to Nathan are:
Welcome Knight b, c1805
Olney Knight b. c1807
Ambrose Knight b. c1819
Nathan Knight b. c1827
Much research was needed as there were at least 3 other Nathan Knights with near proximity and dating as well as a Nathanial Night with a wife Elizabeth (not sourced/referenced).
At this time no explanation is forthcoming for the large gap of time between Olney and Ambrose Knight.
