Biography

Richard Knight was born before August 1747. He was the son of John Knight and Elizabeth Eppes. He passed away in 1787.

He is named in his father's 7 February 1760 Will.[1][2]

His father died before 18 February 1762 when his Will was proved. His mother Elizabeth is not mentioned in his father's Will, so she presumably predeceased John.

On 15 July 1762, at the July Court 1762 of Sussex County, " Richard Knight Infant Orphan of John Knight dece’d personally appeared in Court and Chose Jordan Knight for his Guardian, Whereupon the said Jordan Knight with John Knight his security entered into and acknowledged their bond for his the said Jordan’s faithful performance of the said Trust."[3]

1764 – Aug – VA Sussex – Admin – Jordan Knight guardian of Richard Knight who is the orphan of John Knight is dism (?). (Southside Virginian, Vo. 6, 1988, p. 129, extracted by L. H. Hart, VA Beach public library.)

Research Notes

Butts County, Georgia, was created on 24 Dec 1825 from Henry County and Monroe County.

Name

The suffix Sr. is unsourced.

Date of Birth

A complete search of the 212 images of the Albemarle Parish Register, 1739–1778,[4] found no record for Richard's birth. William Foster Jr 23:31, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

An alternate birth date of about 1725 was previously listed. This date is known to be a guess, chosen to evenly space the births of the known children of John Knight assuming a specific order of birth. That order of birth now appears incorrect based on the 15 July 1762 guardianship record discussed below. Spratlin-29 22:18, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

More recently discovered records allow for a more precise estimation of his birth year:

1760 Feb 7 - named in his father's Will[1]
1762 Jul 15 - chose brother Jordan as his guardian; presumably between 14-21 yrs of age[3]
1763 Aug - listed in "Sussex County Orphans' Dockets"; presumbly between 14-21 years of age
1764 Aug - listed as "dism." in "Sussex County Orphans' Dockets"; presumbly between 14-21 years of age
1766 Aug - listed as "dismt." in "Sussex County Orphans' Dockets"; presumbly between 14-21 years of age
1768 Aug - listed as "of age" in "Sussex County Orphans' Dockets"; presumably over 21 years of age

"Sussex County Orphans' Dockets," by L. H. Hart,[5] an index of guardianship records, is referred to in the above item list. However, this index is unsourced. It says the items are extracted from Reference Dockets and Docket Books of Sussex County, but there are no known books by these names. Attempts to correlate the items listed with the Order Books of Sussex County have only been partially successful. The items listed above referring to this index and without a citation are therefore secondary records.

Based on this item list, Richard was presumably under the age of 21 years in August 1766, and over the age of 21 years in August 1768. Using the later date, Richard was presumably born before August 1747. Spratlin-29 22:18, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Death

His purported death, listed as 24 February 1787 in Butts, may be somehow conflated with that of Richard Knight Jr. (abt.1760-bef.1831) who died in Butts County, Georgia. However, Butts County did not yet exist in 1787. In 1787, the land that would become Butts County was in Creek Lands. This presumed death place is unlikely.
