Biography

Gehue was born on November 10, 1895 in Alabama, United States. He was the youngest child of John Knight and Margaret Johns Knight.

In the 1900 U. S. Census (June 7, 1900) the family of John Knight and Margaret Knight was living in Trammell Crossroads, Chambers County, Alabama, United States. John was forty-six years old and farming on a rented farm. There were six children in the household including four year old Gehue. name.

In the 1910 U. S. Census (April 29, 1910) the family was in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama, United States. John was farming on a farm that he owned with a mortgage. All six of their children were still living, but fourteen year old Gehue was the only child left in the home of his parents. He was attending school and could read and write. He was also a farm labourer on the home farm.

On September 6, 1918 Gehue was inducted into the U. S. Army at LaFayette, Chambers County Alabama. The United States was waging war against Germany in World War 1. At the time, he had given his address as Rt #3 Box 55, Wadley, Randolph, Alabama, United States which was likely the home of his parents. He reported for duty on September 21, 1918 and was entrained to camp the next day. He was assigned to the 157th Depot Brigade at Camp Gordon, Georgia. At this location recruits were received and provided training, equipment and uniforms. On October 26, 1918 he was transferred to the hospital where he remained until his discharge. The reason for the hospitalization has not been found. An Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 ending the fighting. Gehue was honorably discharged on December 9, 1918.

In the 1920 U. S. Census (February 13, 1920) Gehue (Jehu) Knight was listed as a "boarder" in the household of his sister Icie Mae and her husband Ebber B. Bishop. They lived near LaFayette, Chambers County, Alabama, United States. Gehue was twenty-six years old, single, and listed as a farmer working on his own account.

Gehue's father, John, died on September 9, 1928. In his memorial appearing in The Lafayette Sun Gehue was noted as living in Fairfax, Chambers County, Alabama.

In about 1922 Gehue married Eunice Pauline Adams. Their son Gene was born in about1926.

In the 1930 U. S. Census (April 5, 1930) Eunice and Gehue were living in at 801 Groat Street in Lagrange, Troup County, Georgia, United States. Gehue was thirty-four years old and working in a cotton mill. Eunice was twenty-six years old. Both Eunice and Gehue could read and write. Their son Gene was four years old.

Gehue's mother died in Harris County, Georgia on February 12, 1933. She had been living there for fifteen months. Her obituary notes that Gehue was the only one of her children who lived in Harris County at the time so perhaps she was living with his family.

In the 1940 U. S. Census (April 9,1940) Gehue and Eunice lived just outside the town of Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama, United States. Gehue was working at the Dye Works at the Lanett Mill. He owned a home valued at $1000. Their son was not listed with them, so he was perhaps visiting other family members.

Gehue died on October 12, 1967 in West Point, Troup County, Georgia, United States. He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama....

Research Notes

Millitary

There seem to be conflicting notes about the year that Gehue spent his short term in service. Most show it was 1918 but some show similar events in September and October in the year 1917. More information is needed.

Residence

The records show Gehue living in multiple places in Georgia and Alabama. I was born in West Point, Troup County, Georgia but my family never lived there. They lived in Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama. The two locations share a border. The towns of Lanett, Fairfax (as well Riverdale and Shawmut) were mill villages that each had a mill and mill housing. They were clustered in the Chattahoochee valley along the Chattahoochee river. In the 1980s the mills were closing an the homes sold to residents. The towns were incorporated into the current town of Valley, Chambers County, Alabama. Gehue also lived in Harris County, Georgia. A small amount of the town of West Point is in Harris County which was created from the counties of Troup and Muscogee Counties. LaGrange, Milltown and LaFayette are all within 25 miles of Lanett
