Uncertain Existence

Elizabeth Steadman Owings[1] states regarding Louis Amis (1670-1756):

"It is not known who nor when he married (THE HUGUENOT, No. 4, pp. 34, 35). He and his wife had at least two children."

The profile of Elizabeth (Knight) Amis (abt.1675-abt.1750) was created from an unsourced GEDCOM import in 2012. That import included a span source "S682", poorly cited, that appears to be for an unsourced Find a Grave memorial:

Find A Grave: Memorial #184904872 for Elizabeth Knight Amis (memorial only, no headstone photo). [unsourced]

A merge with another profile in 2014 then added a source, poorly cited, for the marriage of a Louis Amis and Elizabeth Knight:

Place: North Carolina[2]

A search of the Ancestry U.S., Marriage Index, 1741-2004 database for Elizabeth Knight, with spouse Louis Amis, returns:

Elizabeth Knight & Lewis Amis, 25 Dec 1781, Granville, North Carolina
Elizabeth Knight & Lewis Amis, North Carolina

These are the same marriage; the year is hard to read and has apparently been transcribed into records with both years.

This source is clearly referring to James Lewis Amis (1760-1825) and Elizabeth Woodson (Knight) Amis (abt.1760-1825) of Granville County, North Carolina, with a marriage bond dated 25 December 1781.

The biography from the Find a Grave memorial was added to the Biography on 9 November 2022.

An unsourced family tree with the same basic information was also added to the Sources on 9 November 2022:

FamilySearch Person: G6KM-29F for Elizabeth Knight. [unsourced]

It appears this person never existed, and was created in on-line family trees based on the two North Carolina marriage records which are clearly for a different couple from a different century.

Are there any records to prove this person existed? If not, I propose to add the Uncertain Existence template.

It looks to me like this Elizabeth Knight was imported from an unsourced tree whose owner appears to have found a marriage "record" for a Louis Amis and Elizabeth Knight on Ancestry.com. But that record is for a marriage in NC. If you look carefully, there is another marriage record on Ancestry that is also in Granville NC for a Louis Amis and Elizabeth Knight, but that record says they married in 1781 or 1791 (hard to read). These 2 records are for a DIFFERENT Louis Amis (see the Research Note "Conflated" above that lists their profiles).

Reviewing all the sources listed in the profiles of Louis and Elizabeth, including several others I found and added to Louis, I see not evidence that anyone knows the name of Louis' wife. I also see no evidence that this Elizabeth Knight existed. I am proceeding to mark her as Uncertain Existence as I proposed to do a month ago.

I now propose this Elizabeth Knight be detached from Louis Amis.

Logically should also detach her from the listed father and children. Will defer doing so until 18 Jan 2023 to allow for review.

She is attached to father William Peter Knight, but her biography says her father is Lewis (?).

On Nov 10, a Find a Grave memorial (no sources, no gravestone photo) and a FamilySearch tree profile (no sources) were added to the biography, but both of these are unsourced. I added the Unsourced template as this profile still appears to be unsourced.

Is there any proof this person and her marriage existed in this era? The two available sources are an unsourced Find A Grave memorial, and the marriage bond for a marriage in 1781.
