Elizabeth E. Knight was born in April, 1835 in Alabama, United States, daughter of John W. Knight (1795–1878) and Martha Webb (1802–1865).

Early Life

In 1850, Elizabeth (15) was living in Clarke County, Alabama, with her parents, John (54) and Patsy (48); her siblings, Martha (22), Susannah (19), William (17), Rebecca (16), James (13), Hiram (10), Eliza Gibbons (26), and Martha Gibbons (1), Allen Knight (8), and Alexander Gibbons (2). [1]

Marriage

Elizabeth (24) married Howell Henry Thomas Hutto (25) son of John Andrew Jackson Hutto and Louisa Ann (Judah) Hutto) on March 9, 1860, in Clarke County, Alabama. Howell had been married previously for about 7 years.[2]

In the 1860 census, Elizabeth and Howell lived and farmed in Clarke County, Alabama. They had three children: Nancy (7), Martha (5), and John (1). The children were likely Howell's from his prior marriage, as the two had only been married a few months.[3]

Death of Husband in Civil War

Elizabeth's husband Howell died while serving for the 32nd Alabama Infantry during the Civil War. He died on November 11, 1862. Elizabeth later filed for and was granted a widow's pension. [4]

In 1880, Elizabeth (45) was widowed, and her occupation was Farmer. She lived in Chilton, Clarke, with her son, Seborne (18), who was assisting on the farm. [5]

In the 1900 census, Elizebeth (age 66) lived with her son Sebron (39) and his family in Election Precinct 14 Clarksville, Clarke, Alabama. Also in the household were her daughter-in-law Sallie (34) and grandchildren Arcale (18), Howell (15), Lula (13), and Stanley Hutto (8). [6]

In the 1910 census, Elizabeth (age 74) was the widowed head of household in New Prospect, Clarke, Alabama. Her son Andrew (48) and sister Susie (82) were living with her.[7]

Death / Burial

Elizabeth died in 1914 in Alabama, aged 78. She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Chilton, Clarke County, Alabama.[8]
