Biography

William arrived in Australia aboard HMS "CARANJAH" on March 10, 1873. He was a railway employee for the Tasmanian Mainline Railway Company (which brought out boat loads of emmigrants to work on the railroad)

William died on November 6, 1915 at Marengo Street, Young at the age of 77 years from Arterio Sclerosis and Heart Failure. Informant was Norman Samuel Conrad CROOK ( son in law, Wattamondara) and was buried at Young on November 8, 1915. His funeral was held on November 8, 1915 and buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Young. Officiant was Stanley A T CHAMPION while witnesses to the burial were Joseph PATTERSON and Alfred LIDEMAN.

"OBITUARY. "MR. WILLIAM KNIGHT.

"Another old resident of Young Mr. William KNIGHTdied suddenly at his home in Marengo Street, Young, about 2.30 on Saturday afternoon last, the cause of death being heart failure. The news was soon transmitted around town, and was heard with profound regret by all of the deceased's old friends. Mr. KNIGHT was a man of outstanding character. He lived a good life, and his honesty and general uprightness won for him the esteem of all who knew him. Of a quite unassuming nature, Mr. KNIGHT did not identity himself with public movements, his chief concern being his home and family. He was a devoted member of St. John's Church, and when health permitted was a most regular attendant at Divine Service.

"The late Mr. KNIGHT was 77 years of age. Born in Surrey (England) in 1838, he left his native land when 34 years old. He took up his residence in Tasmania, but only remained on the island for two years. He there became united in marriage to his future partner in life Miss Sarah Ann BURRELL. On leaving Tasmania Mr. and Mrs. KNIGHT crossed to Victoria where they resided for ten years. Thirty one years ago they came to N.S.W. and settled at Young. This was before the railway was opened to Young, the construction of the line being then in operation, and Mr. KNIGHT superintended the laying of the plates on the section from Harden to Young. When the line was complete, Mr. KNIGHT was employed as a fettler on this line, and up to the time of his retirement from the railway service about ten years ago was ganger on the Young lengths. He was a most capable officer, and highly esteemed both by the department and the men over whom he was ganger. After leaving the railway service, Mr. KNIGHT felt that he was still able to work, and went into business as a grocer, etc in premises now occupied by Mr. A. E. PHILLIPS at the corner of Zouch and Burrowa Streets. This he carried on with success for about six years, when he sold out and built a nice home in Marengo Street. Since then Mr. KNIGHT has lived a retired life, and up to the past twelve months or so, enjoyed excellent health. Since then, however, he has not been too well, and six weeks ago became so bad that he was compelled to seek medical aid. This was the first occasion during the whole of his 43 years residence in Australia that he was under a doctor's care. A fortnight ago, he seemed to recover his customary health, and was so well on Saturday morning that he came down town, and made several purchases. After going home, he worked about the garden, and had a hearty dinner. After dinner however, he complained of feeling unwell, and died peaceably within ten minutes of the time the illness attacked him.

"The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest beside those of his late daughter Daisy, to the Church of England portion of the Young cemetery. The Rev. S. A. T. CHAMPION officiated at the grave. Several beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave, including one from an old member of the railway service with whom Mr. KNIGHT had been associated with ever since leaving England, 43 years ago, and who was present at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. PATTERSON Bros.

"Mr. KNIGHT leaves a wife and grown up family of two sons and four daughters, who will mourn the loss of a kind and good husband and father. The sons are Warrant Officer William J. KNIGHT (at present in a military hospital in England), and Mr. C. B. KNIGHT (Manager of Government Savings Bank at Forbes). The daughters are Mrs. J. REID (Masterton, N.Z.), Mrs. C. MOXON (Paddington), Mrs. N. CROOK (Noonbinna Public School, Cowra district), and Miss Myra KNIGHT (living at home). Besides the above there are four grandchildren.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to the family in their great sorrow." Young Witness Tuesday 9 November, 1915
