Richard Mortimer Knollin was born in the Parish of Kingsteignton, Devonshire, England. He was the son of Richard Knollin and Jane Mortimer. Richard Mortimer Knollin was a miller for a number of years in the Parish of Ilsington, Devon. He married Sarah Richards on December 31, 1805 in Berry Pomeroy, England, daughter of John Richards and Sarah Hayman. In 1827 he left England with his family sailing on the Barque Armadello (Armadillo) from Bristol, arriving in New York on June 22 1827. The family then traveled by Packet via the Hudson River and Erie Canal to Chittenango, Madison County, New York. There he rented land and worked in a grist mill until 1832 when he moved to Sandy Creek, New York. He obtained land and farmed the rest of his life in Sandy Creek. He and Sarah had eight children, all born in England.
