European Aristocracy
Sir Richard Knollys was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Richard, fifth son of Sir Francis Knollys and Catherine Carey was born in 1552 on the Saturday before Ascension Day [1] which would have been the 21 May 1552. [2]

Richard attended Magdalen College, Oxford in about 1564 and then studied at the Middle Temple in 1571. He was described as of Stanford in the Vale, Berkshire. [3]

During his life, Richard was an associate of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. He was present at his sister Lettice's marriage to Dudley in 1578; he was a beneficiary in Dudley's 1582 will and in 1584 was a trustee for Lettice's jointure. [4]In that same year, Richard became an MP to the English Parliament for Wallingford. [5]

Richard married Joan Heigham.[6] They had at least five children, the first of whom was baptised at Rotherfield Greys in Oxfordshire and the rest baptised at Stanford in the Vale, Berkshire.

  • Henry (1586)
  • Lettice (1587)
  • Robert (1589)
  • Dorothy (1590)
  • Francis (1592)

Richard had his will drawn up on 24 July 1596. It mentioned:

  • wife Joan
  • eldest son Henry
  • second son Robert
  • third son Francis
  • daughters Lettice and Dorothy
  • uncle Henry Knollys (dec)
  • brother Sir Francis Knollys, Knight.

One interesting part of his will admonished his daughters not to be disobedient or stubborn in taking advice from their mother and the overseers of his will with regard to their marriages. If they did then their generous marriage portions of £300 each would revert to the daughter who was prepared to conform to the wishes of the family. [7] His will was probated on 27 Oct 1596.

Although Richard requested in his will to be buried at Stanford, the parish registers show that he was in fact buried on 21 August at Rotherfield Grey in Oxfordshire. [8] This occurred only three days after the burial of his father Sir Francis.
