Mistaken Identities and Disputed Origins

This man (married in 1584 to Elizabeth Reade) has been confused with other men named William Knapp or William Knop. He should not be confused with the William Knopp, 1580-1658, son of Thomas Knopp and Alice Howlat, who married Judith Tue and Priscilla Akers.

The origins of this William Knopp are not known, but various publications have identified him as the son of a John Knapp and Martha Blois or the son of Robert Knapp and Margaret Poley.[1][2] There is no evidence for either of these sets of parents.

Also note: There is no relationship between this family and the family of Nicholas Knapp, immigrant to Watertown and Stamford.[3]

William Knopp married Elizabeth Reade on 27 September 1584.[4][5]

Five children were born to the marriage of William Knopp and Elizabeth Reade, all in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk:[6]

  • Margaret Knopp, b. Bef 22 Aug 1585
  • John Knopp, b. Bef 12 Nov 1587
  • Rose Knopp, b. Bef 22 Feb 1590, d. 03 Mar 1634, Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England
  • Elizabeth Knopp, b. before 8 Jul 1593, d. 19 Feb 1664, Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire
  • William Knopp, b. before 16 Jan 1597, d. before 21 Apr 1627, Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England

Knapp-1940 and Knopp-24 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles formerly had the same parents (but there is no credible evidence for those parents).

I have edited Knopp-24 so the sources will appear. I see that the parents displayed Knopp-24 do not match the text of the biography. Therefore I will change the proposed merge to an unmerged match.
