Captain William Knott came to Canada with the Queen's Rangers in 1792. He was unmarried at the time. On the voyage out one of his fellow soldiers died and was buried at sea. A short time after the arrival of the Rangers at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) Captain Knott married his widow, and they had a child born in Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake). In 1793 the Rangers moved to York (Toronto).[1]
He was the first jailer in the City of York (now Toronto).[1]
A transcript of early marriages in Niagara shows a William Knott, bachelor, marrying an Elizabeth Haggerty, spinster, July 28, 1793.[2] Is Elizabeth the widow mentioned above, and the transcript or the original incorrect about her status?
