Susan was born about 1822. She is the daughter of Prettyman Knowles and Patsy Greer. ^[1]

Although records are slim, family history has Susan marrying a John Smith. There is only one John Smith with a wife named Susan living in the Petersburg, Illinois area, the area in which Prettyman Knowles lived. The dates match up, The odds of this being the correct Susan are rather high ^[2] .

In 1890, there is a marriage license issued to Alice Smith and Lewis E Schnell in Edwards County. That document cites her parents as Susan Knowles and John Smith ^[3].
