Biography

See Thomas Jones for marriage years of Dorothy Jones.

In 1855, Dorothy A. Jones and six children live next door to T. W. Jones [Thomas W. Jones] at a location with the same coordinates as the bounty land [9 N, 2 W, section 24] awarded to T. W. Thomas, a veteran of the War of 1812. The rest of the Jones family, Dennis, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Winny, lives nearby.

The children are recorded as one male under the age of 10 [David], one male 10-20 [Andrew], three females under 10 [Laura, Nancy, and Alice], and one female ten to twenty [Mary]. Nancy was born in 1851 and Alice in 1854.

Thomas Jones, Sr. died on October 14, 1855 and Winny, his wife of over 65 years, died three years later on August 4, 1858. They are buried in the Greenbush Cemetery near their grandson, Thomas.

Dorothy’s father-in-law and his family moved to Bates, Mingo, Missouri before 1860. The bounty land they had squatted on and farmed for ten years was sold three times in 1856. Dorothy and her children lost their home, so one has to wonder how it all figured into “Dorothay” marrying George W. Cooper on October 30, 1856. They traveled to Texas soon after their marriage where their son Dennis was born in 1857. Just two years later, George died.

In 1860, Dorothy and her seven children are living in Swan, Warren, Illinois which is a township bordering Greenbush. She is 40 and calls herself “Dorita”. Her children range in age from 3-15. Andy is 16, Mary is 15, Joshua is 14, Louisa is 11, Nancy is 9, Alice is 6 and Dennis is 3. Louisa, Nancy, and Alice have attended school within the last year.

Louisa married Edward Slump in 1866. By 1867, the young couple, Louisa’s brother David and her Uncle Dennis were all living in Warren, Iowa.

Dorothy. 50, was calling herself Ann in 1870 which resulted in most people searching, but not finding her on the 1870 census. She is living with her son Andrew, 27, and his wife Eliza, 25, who was born in Pennsylvania. They have a one-year-old son named David. Andrew is a farm laborer and has $300 in his personal estate.

1880, when she claims to be 62 instead of 56, "Dorsia" is living with her married son, Andrew, and his family in Ellison Township, Warren County, Illinois.

On July 13, 1896, Dorothy Ann died at the age of 72 in Roseville, Warren County, Illinois and was buried on July 14, 1896 in the Greenbush cemetery, but she is not on the Greenbush Cemetery list of burials
