He married Naomi Emily Field on 26 December 1863 in Queensland, Australia [1] and they were the parents of Susan Ann (Knowles) McLean, William Knowles, Sarah Jessie Knowles, John Knowles, Henry George Knowles, Richard James Knowles, Naomi Emily Knowles and Lily Elizabeth (Knowles) Meiklejohn.
William died before 1918 in Australia.
