Susan Louise Knowles was born in Nassau, Bahamas to Uriah Theophilus Knowles and Martha Simms Knowles.
She married Lawrence George Simms in 1892 at the Church of St. Peter, Simms, Long Island, Bahamas. The couple had 13 children - of whom seven survived their infancy. Among the children: Charles, Iva, Ethelyn Rowena Simms, Lorna, Cecil Evert, Evangeline Louise "Eva", Iva, Lawrence Jr., Inez, Ivy Elaine, David, and Joyce Simms.
