George Johnstone "Jimmy" Knowles was born 17th July 1887 in Ireland. [1][2] He was the second son of Admiral Sir Charles Knowles, Bart., of, Oxford, England and his wife, Mary Ellen Thomson. He appears to be named for his paternal grandmother’s uncle, George Johnstone, 3rd marquess of Annandale.
