Serial killer known as "The Casanova Killer". Knowles, already a career criminal, embarked on a multi-state rampage after his prison penpal called off their engagement on the advice of her psychic.
He escaped his cell in Jacksonville, FL on July 26, 1974. From July to November of 1974, Knowles murdered 20 people (he claimed a total bodycount of 34), and abducted others, some of whom escaped and some he released unharmed.
Knowles was captured November 17 and taken into custody. He was shot and killed on December 18, 1974 by two police officers who had been escorting him to find a handgun Knowles had taken from a Florida State Trooper Knowles had murdered. According to police statements, Knowles attacked the two officers with the intent to escape, and was gunned down. Others, including his family's attorney, asserted that Knowles was executed by the police officers.
