Charlie lived in Macon, Georgia, and worked as a clerk in a message type business from the early 1900s to about 1918. He started a grocery store in Eatonton, Georgia, where he had an apartment in the back of the store. According to a newspaper article in the Macon newspaper, on 22 March 1920, he was found deceased by his brother in the back of the store. It was later determined that he died as a result of a stroke. His brother, Joe Henry Knowles, was administrator of his estate. Charlie is buried in Eatonton in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Eatonton, April 1 - On Monday morning of this week, Charlie Knowles, ran a store on the edge of the town on the Rockville Road, was found dead in his bed. He had been sleeping in the rear of the store and Monday morning some people, who came to buy supplies, could not arouse him. They called his brother and had him break open the window and found him dead, lying in bed. After holding the inquest, it was found that he died from natural causes and had been dead since about 12 o'clock the night before.[2]
