Mary Knowles was born in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, England.

Mary was born in 1853, her birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1853 in the Aston-Under-Lyne District. (Volume 08D Page 363). Her christening was recorded in May 1853. [1]She is the daughter of Thomas Knowles and Martha Clayton.

In 1861 and 1871, she was recorded with her family in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England. [2]Her occupation was cotton tenter. [3]which is defined as

Tenterer - Someone who, after cloth was dyed, stretched it on a frame, called a "Tent" for drying . This frame was fitted with hooks known as "Tenterhooks" - about which we all know! Photo (1950) 2) The term was also used for a person who looked after or watched something. .i.e. Tip tenter - person inspecting finished shuttle tips after manufacture. (Tenter - from Tender, to tend) [4]
