Born in Uxbridge, England in April of 1607 to Robert and Mary Knowlton; one of the three Knowlton brothers to emigrate to Ipswich, MA. A cordwainer (shoemaker) like his brother John and his father, he first appears in Ipswich town records in 1638-39 with brothers John and William.
Receives a bequest from close relative Ralph Knolton in Ruslip, Middlesex, England in 1638, connecting him to his two brothers and English family.
Deacon Thomas Knowlton and Mary Kimball married May 17,1682,Ipswich,Massachusetts.[1]
In 1646, bought the house and land of one Humphrey Bradstreet, probably Humphrey Bradstreet. Before 1668, removed the house and built another in which he remained the rest of his life; that house is still there at 27 Summer Street.
Appointed Town Constable in 1648, and on a list of citizens who agreed to contribute to a fund for Major Denison for defense of the town.
Appointed administrator and guardian of his brother William Knowlton's estate and raised his youngest daughter, Marry.
From 1662 on, Thomas is often recorded inventorying estates or overseeing wills and witnessing the signing of documents.
In 1666, was one of many signatories to the Loyalist Petition in support of Charles II.
In 1667, is made Deacon of First Church in Ipswich.
Thomas left most of his estate to his grand nephew, Nathaniel, but deeded the house and land his nephew Thomas (son of William) had been living in for 17 years in exchange for quit-claiming his interest in William's estate that Thomas administered.

PLEASE NOTE however that there is uncertainty as to which Mary Kimball married Deacon Thomas Knowlton. While the "History of the Kimball family in America ..." (Morrison & Sharples, 1897) identifies her as the daughter of John and Mary (Bradstreet) Kimball, this seems very doubtful as John Kimball named his daughter Mary in his will made in 1697. Thus John's daughter would not be Deacon Thomas Knowlton's wife who died in Nov 1688.
