Biography

Mercy (Knowlton) Bates Jr. was born in Massachusetts.

Mercy (alias Marcy; Mary), the daughter of Thomas Knowlton III and Mercy Unknown was born on 7 August 1694 at Ipswich, Massachusetts.^[1]

Mercy (incorrectly listed as Mary) married John Bates (listed as 3rd on the marriage record), the son of John and Hannah (Lord) Bates Sr. on 3 November 1714 at Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut.^[2][3]They had seven children born at East Haddam, Connecticut:

1. James Bates (b. 1715; d. 1760),
2. Ephraim Bates (b. 17 Oct 1715),^[4]
3. Sarah Bates (b. 22 May 1718),^[5]
4. Hannah Bates (b. 16 Oct 1721; d. 1795),^[6] m. 1738 at CT Samuel Banning (1713-1803)
5. Mehitable Bates (b. 9 Jun 1727),^[7]
6. Rebecca Bates (b. 5 Jan 1729),^[8]
7. Mary Bates (b. 1733; d. 1793).

Mercy's father, Thomas Knowlton, wrote his will on 15 September 1730 at East Haddam and mentioned his daughter, Mercy Bates, among his surviving children.^[9]

Mercy (Knowlton) Bates died on 7 August 1736 in her 42nd year at East Haddam. She is buried in the Old Cove Burying Ground at East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut.^[10]

Research Note

• Ancestry had Mercy's mother listed as Marjery Goodhue (b. 1670, Ipswich, MA; d. 23 Aug 1698, Ipswich, MA). She married Thomas Knowlton in 1694. Three children are listed for them: 1) Mercy Knowlton (1694-1796); 2) Joseph Knowlton (1796-1760); and 3) Deborah Knowlton (1698), m. Thomas Adams.
• Thomas Knowlton likely remarried given that Mercy (Knowlton) Bates has five half-siblings listed after she was born.
• Research needs to be done on these family members and clarify discrepancies.
